The Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled Madhya Pradesh Government has made marriage registration compulsory. Now it would be mandatory to get marriage registered within 30 days whether it is a civil marriage or traditional one.
According to an official spokesman as per the orders issued by the Madhya Pradesh Government in this regard, the Commissioner, Economics and Statistics has been declared the Chief Marriage Registrar. The District Collectors and District Planning Officers would be Deputy Marriage Registrar and in from the point of view of coordination Chief Executive Officer, Janpad Panchayat has been declared Block Marriage Registrar.
In rural areas the registration of marriages would be done by gram panchayats and in urban areas by concerning civic bodies. For registration of marriage in urban areas the Commissioner, municipal corporation, Municipal Officer and Administrative Officer of nagar panchayat and Cantonment Areas and in rural areas gram panchayat secretary have been declared Marriage Registrar.
The application forms for registration of marriage would be available at the offices of gram panchayat, nagar panchayat, municipality and Municipal Corporation. Registered marriage certificate can be obtained by paying a fee of Rs. 30.
The registration made within the prescribed period as per rules would be a definite proof of marriage. This would be an authentic document of marriage and will be useful for couples in matters related to succession, the spokesman said.
